HRP Independence Day, part 1

Aloha Friends. Welcome back.  Part one, of two.

More national, less state & local this month … because HRP stopped functioning.

There are many strong and energy-filled conservatives and Republicans in Hawaii. Thank you. The Hawaii Republican Party can be better.

Meetings – HRP finances – By The Numbers

-July 9-11 National Right to Life Convention New Orleans

-August 6-9 RedState Gathering, Atlanta

-August 21-22 Americans for Prosperity Summit, Columbus OH

-August 28-30 NFRA Presidential Endorsing Convention, Nashville

-September 11-13 Eagle Council, St Louis

-September 25-27 Values Voter Summit Washington DC

-October 3-4 Honolulu Gun Show, Hawaii Historic Arms Association, Blaisdell Center

-November 8 Oahu Friends of NRA

-HRA Sports Shooting Fair, Kokohead Range. Great gun (and archery) and shooting event for the entire family. Shoot all you want of whichever gun you want to shoot, and enjoy an evening of NOT cleaning weapons. Raiser for Hawaii Rifle Association. Several thousand participants over the weekend. There are so many stations (50+) and weapons (hundreds) that not a single line was long and it was fun to swap notes and tales with folks. Lots of friends, including from the Big Island, and met new friends. Everyone sported a smile. It was fun. Expert range and safety officers, instructors and range assistants. Shooters from across the state, all ages, all levels of experience. For less than I paid for dinner that evening, got to fire weapons that I’d otherwise never get to shoot. From a sweet new single stack 9mm, to the Mossberg 12 ga pump, to a .44 magnum (“Think Dirty Harry” the range guide told me). Most interesting was the 1917 Enfield bolt action 30-06 which wouldn’t miss the target. Though, birds are safe as 70% of my skeet clay pigeons flew gracefully to the far berm untouched by shot from the 20 ga. Fun day, with fun people, at a professionally-run event. Don’t have to be an HRA member, but you’ll join when you experience this event. and watch for their next Shooting Fair.

-Divisive issue is dividing a community. Coordinating and managing four town council races (makes herding cats seem simple) in Delaware (yanked in, a personal thing). Candidate recruitment – six candidates (four are ours) for four seats. Already won two – mayor bolted when she saw the opposition and one of ours is an incumbent. Same as ALL politics: ID your voters. Get them to vote. Different environment: small town, everyone knows each other, everyone works with another, children play together. Similar to Hawaii: everyone who watched an episode of West Wing thinks they know how to run a campaign. Election is early August. Hint: Can’t do well at anything if you only do it every other year.

State Convention (condensed from June). Too irrelevant, liberal, expensive & stodgy, with no discussion of principles or platform. Read on to see if this Convention Preview was accurate.

Saiki & Hellreich waste stage time attacking conservatives, not Dems. House ‘leader’ Fukumoto “We are losing and we are going to keep losing unless we do things differently,” contradicts her caucus clique and the party clique doing all they can to maintain the status quo. Senate leader Slom skips, telling Hamada radio of HQ “they’re trying to get rid of” conservatives. No comments allowed – floor microphones were off. Each “vote’ was a cursory ‘raise your hand if you agree,’ followed immediately by ‘looks like enough to pass.’ Reader “I was appalled at the kangaroo court that was put on. No debate, no platform committee or rules committee meetings or real discussion.“

Finances. HQ says our party of fiscal responsibility was in debt for five years. Capital Campaign mortgage account at $22k is suspicious; should near 25k.

2000+ delegates/alternate delegates possible. ‘Leaders’ fail to motivate members to attend. HQ recruited only 456, and only 196 showed = less than 4/district and considerably less than 1/precinct. Nine districts had zero reps, several only one. BI 3 delegates, Maui & Kauai each less than a basketball team, should concern potential candidates. Who couldN’T Saiki & Rohlfing get to attend? Secretary Kubo, treasurer Klompus committeeman Liu, and finance chair Felix skipped. Nine of past ten party chairs (me, if you’re wondering), any past executive or finance director, Slom, McDermott, Pine (R?) and Couch, Capelouto and Crowley (’14 CD2), Lingle, Hemmings (google him), HIRA President Montes, Ahu, Nonaka, Fukumoto’s mentor Johanson, or Johanson office manager Gray, Fale, Fontaine, nine districts (zero attend), virtually anyone from a NI, Kauuwai’s ‘chief strategist’ Kay or anyone from Kauuwai’s term only three years ago, Finnegan, HNL TEA King or any TEA leader, candidates Meyer, Lethem, Leau, Ku, Kapoi, Mathieu, Manutai, Marshall, Fowler, Kaapu, Shimizu, and other forgettable candidates. 250 of 450 delegates didn’t attend, another 1550 never signed up.

Elections/anointment. The establishment rolled through their slate. Kulbis mailer “The current leadership did not announce the elections thus suppressing any challenges.“

Rules. 1. Hellreich rule passed: party officials may support candidates in a primary. Allows NCW Hellreich to add to more than $1/2M Lingle & Aiona campaigns salary while supposedly raising party funds. Allows Rolfing & officers to endorse a Presidential or LOCAL candidate while ‘fairly’ distributing party resources. 2. Capital campaign $ which was to be used for only mortgage payment is now used for building maintenance, property tax, office improvements, and such other expenses determined by the State Cmte. 3. Audit’s gone; now a review of party finances by three people selected by the party chair.

-HRP FEC. Rohlfing’s first, another month in the RED. End of May, HRP continues in the RED which means NO funds raised for messaging or campaigning. Even with Convention $, receipts drop to $7,281 = $2,654 contributions with only 15 contributors on record + 4,610 state account transfer + ZERO (again) from RNC assistance. Sustaining Donors: only 3/14 Exec Cmte, 2/51 District chairs, 9 members. When leaders don’t buy in, don’t expect others to do so. Disbursements = $15,773, includes ZERO for Federal Election Activity (FEA), $1499 mortgage+2715 building maint, 968 IMS accounting, Parsons’ salary 3749 +1903 payroll tax +339 health insurance +784 workman’s comp, 104 copier, 233 cable, 124 conference call system, 209 parking, way-over-market 1050 Dbase management, Rohlfing’s first expenditure is 1632 for LED lightbulbs on May 5. Federal CoH down to 51k (+20k mortgage, 4.5k counties’) and estimated 35.4k state acct. Not including LDD, this CY HRP has 17k+/month burn rate, raises only 8.5k/month. FEC 4 of 5 months this CY and 6/7 months this election cycle in the RED. HRP CY +2.6k including LDD; election cycle in the RED 27k, living off 2014 funds Saiki did NOT use to elect Republicans. HRP in the red 19/29 past reports, 2/2 since Hellreich crowned Rohlfing.

To fund a Victory program and FEA and to support candidates, HRP must spend less than they raise. In addition to Victory and FEA – absentee ballots, Victory HQ, rallies, some salary, voter registration & ID, for example – HRP must support 76 state candidates, council candidates, candidates for federal office, a Presidential caucus and campaign (or Gubernatorial in the other cycle). This is in addition to ‘running the party.’ Minimum Victory campaign budget should be $150k, not achieved since $300k in 2008 and we still got wacked. National cmte $ ‘earmarked’ for a specific candidate doesn’t help win local races. Current HRP Victory fund = $0.

First month contributions with Rohlfing/Hellreich/Liu (R/H/L) team and 1/2 Parsons (doubling as Executive and Finance Director) is only 37% of the lowest monthly amount this CY; Rohlfing’s $2,654 vs Saiki’s CY low of $7,078 for March. Lack of fulltime paid FD is evidence of Saiki and now Rohlfing’s lack of commitment, and Parsons’ lack of effort. Today, there is still NO Finance Director.

-Last year, HQ lost track and past the last minute entered the Independence Day Kailua parade, low member participation reflected in the lack of planning. This year, Saiki didn’t bother, leaving Rohlfing no choice but to accept the embarrassment of Rs being invisible.

 HRP Activity/Actions Since Convention

Not an omission, an empty box. HRP hasn’t done a thing. If you have info from HQ, please tell us. Clock’s ticking during this valuable time to raise awareness and prep for November 2016.

-The only HQ paid staffer, Parsons, quit/got fired mid-May and left politics. Readers “Parsons was pretty snotty, but most of the time ignored me totally. Did NOT return calls. So glad he’s gone.“ “Parsons resigns. Never got to know him.  Did have run-ins with him.“ “Good that Parsons is gone.“  Though Parsons’ implied he attended RNC meeting, HRP didn’t have an ED attend (or party chairman).

Rohlfing caught unprepared, only 16 months before election. More than a month without an ED, no one really noticed, best he can do from the local Romney team is Fale (she) as ‘Temporary’ Executive Director. Fale is fine if that is the best Rohlfing can do. The only announcement has been Fale on her personal FB page because HRP still can’t figure out how to use their eblast system. A couple district chairs have mercifully tried to get the word out, frustrated that HQ is silent. ‘Temporary’ means we’ll get another, with even less time to prepare for 2016.

By the numbers

0.   District meetings since Giles (last year) and Bradford (appointed by Rohlfing in April) took over, breaking a string of 20 YEARS of monthly East Oahu meetings.

0.  Progress report from the chair’s faux-audit, faux-coalitions, and faux election autopsy ‘committees.’

3.  Months to send out (June 2) draft minutes of the (March 7) State Cmte meeting. Embarrassed, secretary Ready leaves out the two motions voted: Purity reso and district chair donation requirement.

5.  HRP lacks integrity to address Rs – Thielen, Carroll, McDermott, Pine, Fenton – who endorsed Ds against Rs in 2012, now 2014 Cheape, Fukumoto, Egge, and Hanneman’s ‘Rohlfing Rs.’

8.  Months this cycle and twenty-six after Hellreich wrote “the need to use massive voter registration drives to Increase our chances of winning.” Last month, two years after her first report, Hellreich provides the same RNC meeting report which probably will NOT be accomplished.

7.  Years without a HRP strategic plan, finance plan, campaign (Victory) plan.

8.  Kauai county officers, for three house districts with eight convention delegates.

30.  Months since the 2012 required HRP financial audit was to be conducted. 18 since the ’13 audit was due. Seven months since HRP chair promised. Donors don’t give when finances are in question.

496.  Days (as of July 1) to the Presidential election.

-Local parents convince DoE to tell BoE that, if DoE is required to implement the flawed sex education curriculum, the program remain Opt In. Details at Ige’s BoE bucks the people and DoE to implement essentially Porno choices, and reverses Opt In to Opt Out. CB Sex Ed Required. Thank BoE boss Horner for his singular stand against ignorance. Hawaii Rs and Rohlfing/Hellreich/Liu maintain their ‘opposition blackout’ without even a lame press release.

-Blog (can’t tell who owns it) discusses how families are getting screwed by the administration and legislators – Porno Choices, taxes & fees, rail, Opt Out, sex education, marijuana – with an entry that ends with “Families will never get the relief they need because they are too busy to make noise.” For these writers, the bad guys already won. Instead, perhaps families need to take a stand.

Abortion rates drop nationally, and Hawaii is the lowest … and Porno Choice sex advocates and Planned Parenthood abortion champions take credit. whats-behind-the-decline-in-abortions.
