Embarrassing GOP, part 2

Aloha Friends. Welcome to part 2 of 2.

There are many strong and energy-filled conservatives and Republicans in Hawaii.  Thank you.

Writing to conservatives and Republicans, mostly in Hawaii, I email rather than blog because this is a (quasi-) private discussion. These reports chronicle HRP’s story. My perspective is that of conservative, former State Party Chairman and RNC member.  I am not here writing for any of my current conservative organizations, nationally or in Hawaii. Hawaii conservatives need to know that they are not alone. Please forward this to conservatives or let me know to be removed.

Readers’ Comments – Quick Hits – Presidential Campaigns

I don’t necessarily agree with ALL our readers. “Thanks for the info on HRP.  It’s not very encouraging, but it is interesting.“  “I cover my eyes in fear because the picture is so bad.“  “I am a district captain for Convention of States here on the Big Island.“  From a guy who has been in our party four months “You seem passionate.  I recommend getting out there and pressing a little flesh. Getting to know your subject matter does wonders for your perspective.“  Big Island reader “In 2007-2008 I met Dylan Nonaka and volunteered to help him build a more or less conservative element on the Big Island.  We had one small “caucus” that was supposed to have Honolulu HRP representatives give us advice.  What arrived were clueless teenagers!  What a fiasco – and things just got worse.  My wife and I sent out hundreds of letters to the out-of-date list Dylan gave me.“  “What advice would you give to one who was interested in getting involved but not get wrapped up with these folks?“  Potential candidate “I’m really not sure how the party is going to keep the lights on down at the HQ.  Thoughts like why anyone would want to be a republican in this state cross the mind.  I’m frustrated.“  “The motions in the HRP is simply Rigor Mortis.“  “The HRP is just a Club and not a political party.“  “The party is rotting from the head and desperately needs reform“ “Rolfing is slippery.  My senses tingled and not in a good way when I first saw him.“  “I was shocked when only 15,000 Republicans voted in the caucus, and that was a 50% increase over 2012.  What!?  In a state of 1.4 million people?“  “I agree that the HI GOP is weak.“  To HIRA “So how can we get rid of this slimy bit*h and the rest of her ilk and get real conservatives in office?  Can’t the republican party just throw her out along with her counterparts since they are and want to be dems?  This is frigging disgusting.“ “problem is current regime has very few that know how to run much of anything,“  “Fritz has nothing to offer but a fake smile.  Never saw him do anything at Party in all my years of volunteer work.“

There are many strong and energy-filled conservatives and Republicans in Hawaii.  Thank youThe Hawaii Republican Party can be better.

Writing to conservatives & Republicans, mostly in Hawaii, I email rather than blog because this is a (quasi) private discussion. Meetings – Finances – By The Numbers

NRA Annual Meeting, Louisville. www.NRA.org  You MUST attend. 80,452 gun people. Exhibit Hall with 10 acres of guns and stuff from 650 vendors.  Days are long, nights are longer. 2,200 attend NRA Foundation dinner.  Corporate Luncheon raised $2.1M in 30 minutes.  8,000 see Trump at ILA Forum. Toby Keith in concert and 35,000 at the free outdoor Country Jam concert. ILA updates and 1,200 at ILA banquet.  If you believe in the Second Amendment, if you’re a gun guy/gal you must someday attend.  At BoD meeting, Allan Cors reelected NRA President. NRA endorses Trump. Personally told Don that NRA members fully support his and brother Eric’s pro-2A position.  Next year: Atlanta.  Disclaimer: I am on the NRA Military and Veterans Affairs and the Outreach Committees.

-HRP State Convention. BEFORE.

HRP wouldn’t, so HIRA provided a preview with candidate bios and rules changes Tomorrow’s State Convention.  Reader “If HIRA hadn’t informed me, I wouldn’t know.  HRP doesn’t tell or do anything.”

Rules. Dishonesty is one reason Rohlfing can’t get support for HRP. Cancelling Elections. “Change the rules, cancel the election, and stay in power.  That’s exactly what corrupt party officers led by Fritz Rohlfing at the Hawaii Republican Party are trying to get away with.“  NCW candidate, though, thinks they were ignorant of the unintended consequences of cancelling 2017 convention.  Incompetence vs. conniving?  Reader to Walden ”I am no longer an elected member of the Rules Committee.  Per Rules Section 413, our House District did not meet and my term “ended on the day when the election should have been held”.  So there was no real rules committee which had no real rules meetings and came up with no real rules change proposals which presented no honest proposals to the convention which approved changes which weren’t properly forwarded by the (non) committee.

Readers’ Comments – Fukumoto vs McDermott – Presidential Caucus

I don’t necessarily agree with ALL our readers.  “Beth will eventually change parties like Aaron since the Rs are a bit of a joke. At this point it wouldn’t even matter if she left.  Bob is quite unusual…he approves of the Rail project and is an R – it’s difficult to see who are the hypocrites in this State.“  Kauai “the party doesn’t make it convenient to participate if you are on a neighbor island; it’s all about Oahu.  Add to that, people over here don’t want to do anything or take on responsibility, or it’s the same people and no one new.  I think the average age of participants on Kaua’i is 70+.  I got frustrated with the bunch of them last year; I’d had enough of [Hickling].“  “As a candidate myself I felt that my own party betrayed me.“  “As Hawaii’s population increased, HRP has seen a drop in Republican votes from 2008 to 2014 there are 1.4% less Republicans voting.“

[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”16″] Revelations of HQ money hanky-panky coincide with Rohlfing/Hellreich/Liu (R/H/L) hiring a lawyer to silence HIRA.  Had HIRA succumbed they would have ceased operations the day before the controversial state meeting.  Conveniently, then, we’d never know of this corruption.  HIRA still waiting for our impotent HQ to initiate their lawsuit.  They are feckless, as always.   [/pullquote]

-Instead of protecting your interests during this oppressive legislative session, Fukumoto sent a whiny,  sniveling email to HIRA and NFRA asking to not be held accountable.  Fukumoto’s girlfriends were exposed when HIRA called them out for helping Dems and supporting Clinton. Infiltration-Alert—GOP-CHAIR-ROHLFING-INSTALLS-DEMOCRAT-OPERATIVE-AT-HAWAII-GOP   Fukumoto and her girlfriends act like Dems.  HIRA holds them accountable, with all their other liberal friends.

Meetings – Finances – By The Numbers

-RNC Conservative Steering Committee.  About 130 (of 168) RNC members who call themselves conservative, many are.  No one else from Hawaii – Kaauwai, Fukumoto, Chang, Rohlfing, Liu or Hellreich – has been invited to join.  Organized by the Conservative Caucus, 20 of us are Founders.  Prior to the RNC meeting, coordinated actions on RNC Rules, Resolutions.  Interesting comment: race for Texas NCM is a $200,000 campaign, decided by the 10,000 state convention delegates.  In Hawaii our candidates spend nothing for the 100 delegates at State Convention.

RNC, Ft Lauderdale. RNC Punts on Rules  Cruz & Kasich make the rounds.  Speakers: Rumsfeld, FL Gov Scott, ’13 Hours’ authors, dinner party with live music on Grand Floridian Yacht.  Most expensive meeting in years at $300/night, and the yacht party.  To change from US House Rules to Roberts Rules for the convention; RNC Rules Cmte did not have the guts to decide, leaving it to the Convention Rules Cmte.  You were represented by Fale(he) with Rohlfing’s proxy, has never read the national party rules, never been to a rules cmte meeting, never been to an RNC meeting – he voted with the establishment.  Redstate – Establishment Wins at RNC Meeting   In a televised session, Fale was the only male on the cmte on national TV without coat and tie, aiding HRP’s reputation as not ready for prime time politics.  That was the only session for him; no chairman in the chairman’s meeting, no ED in the ED meeting.

Convention(COA).  RNC decides to for the first time use electronic voting for all motions, except voting to determine our nominee.  Hawaii, with no political juice, an ineffective Hellreich, mostly absent ghost Liu, and always absent Rohlfing earned a hotel in the retirement capital of Ohio, Mentor.  The three-star Holiday Inn is 23 miles from the convention and all the activities.

-Cruz Hawaii national delegation.  Relaxed gathering for our members to meet and discuss getting to and being at convention.  Delegates and Alternate Delegates announced this week.

Readers’ Comments – Fukumoto vs McDermott – Presidential Caucus

I don’t necessarily agree with ALL our readers.  Fukumoto used donors’ dollars “$214 costumes for Beth? LOL. To “disguise” as being a Republican? Must not be working.“  “It is embarrassing for the Party to have heat towards HIRA and HIRA is the one alerting members to bad bills moving in the legislature. Instead of spending money and energy going after HIRA, the Party should spend money and energy informing it’s members of the bad bills that are passing through the legislative process. You can bet that if there’s a bill being heard in a committee that Dem activists and unions support or oppose, someone will be there to testify for it or against it.“  “Dump Donald Duck ! He is a Trojan Horse destroying the GOP!“  “I hope to institute a one day per week Trump rally along the roadside from the Convention until election day.“  “I’ve become very dissatisfied with those that call themselves Republicans in Hawaii.  It is in name only, because what I hear is the same old stuff of what we get from the Democrats.“

Meetings – Finances – By The Numbers

-Billy Graham Honolulu rally draws 2500.  No HRP announcement, or collection of contact info.  Another lost opportunity.

displayCPAC, conservative mega-gathering.  Straw poll: Cruz 40, Rubio 30, Trump 15.  12,000-13,000 attend.  Dozens of main stage presenters, 80-100 breakout sessions, 30 radio & TV booths.  Only three attend from Hawaii (it is a conservative event).  Class-less Trump cancels after the last minute, upsetting his supporters.  Dinner with Sheriff David Clarke.  Fiorina headlines Reagan dinner.  Center hall display highlights Hawaii legislature (see photo showing Hawaii as 2nd “Least Conservative State”).  Cruz, on stage, Cruz Rocks CPAC. Disclaimer:  I’m on the ACUF board, CPAC host.

American Spectator Gala.  Ben Stein MC.  300 conservative-libertarians.  Senator Cotton recognized.

Weyrich Awards Dinner.  Didn’t make it, traffic accident (not me).  Conservatives recognize Mark Levin.

-Presidential Caucus.  Rohlfing & Walden try to host a professional caucus.  Trump 43% = 11 delegates, Cruz 32% = 7 delegates, Rubio 13% means Saiki, Aiona, Marumoto, Hellreich, Rohlfing, Fale, Santorum = 1 delegate, Kasich 10% = 0 Djou delegates, Bush 1 = 0, Carson 1 = 0.  More on this below.

Readers’ Comments – Party News – Quick Hits

I don’t necessarily agree with ALL our readers.  “The level of ridiculousness is too high for my tastes. I’m going to remain inactive for now….which is looking like forever.“  “This makes me angry over the slipshod way HRP is running.  Most of the people running the show have no clue, and have never participated when things were run well.”  “The people we have running the show have exceptionally awful people skills, to the point of bordering on antisocial personality disorder.  I have to minimize the amount of exposure I have around these people because, the closer you get, the sicker you get.“  “I suggest we make some serious leadership changes in the HI RP. Can’t continue like this. The game is money and the lack of effective & honest leadership. How can these people sleep at nites when their minds are full of corruption & betrayal?“  “You’d think [Fukumoto] would be in the loop to be more proactive instead they pick all the superficial useless issues …“

-Reader  After observing the Legislature for a month, I see no difference between the Rs and Ds.  Some Ds have better manners, more polite staff and are more principled than the Rs.  Hawaii is where a total charlatan can be a big fish in a small pond.  On the Mainland, some of these people in the Hawaii House or Senate, whether Ds or Rs would be waitresses or used car salesmen.  But in Hawaii, they can fool themselves and others into thinking they’ve arrived.

Meetings – Finances – By The Numbers

Caucus meetings.  1/3 of districts held organizing meetings with low, or no turnout.  1/3 more may do so by the end of March.  1/3 won’t do anything and no one will notice.  You have no idea which category is your district.   Welcome to HRP 2016.  HRP doesn’t want people to attend caucus meetings to become state delegates because those delegates will attend state convention and find that we have place-holders for national committeeman & woman, no election plan nor effort, and no Platform.  Districts are two months later in organizing for 2016 elections.  Three months out, vice chair Monahan and ED Tagavilla revealed there is no convention venue.  Now two months and no venue – voter suppression and HQ incompetence.

CNP, San Diego.  Google it if you’re curious.  Gaffney and Ashcroft were the two evening speakers,   Honored to be on a panel with Tony Perkins and Morton Blackwell to discuss national delegates and committees, the national convention and RNC rules.  Considerable discussion of a Scalia replacement.

-R debate, New Hampshire.  Top three are weak – Trump, Cruz, Rubio.  Governors – Bush, Christie, Kasich – do well.  Christie took Rubio to the woodshed.

-R debate, South Carolina.  Just when we didn’t need any more debates, we did.  Winners:  none.  Loser: Carson has become inconsequential.  Not his message, but his candidacy.

-R debate, Houston.  Sparks.  We needed these issues raised four months ago.

I don’t necessarily agree with ALL our readers.  “I won’t work for Fritz, or Prez Caucus for Walden!  Both are jerks.”  “I refuse to donate a penny to HRP while Hellreich, Saiki, Marumoto, Liu and Rohlfing are in power.  What a corrupt gang of thieves!“  “R situation is hopeless.  People get what they deserve if they want to pay the taxes, have a rail to nowhere, etc.  It’s a form of masochism.“  “Have no faith in hrp ever getting new people to fill legislature or any office for that matter…newspaper said hrp is irrelevant.“  “The Republican party is dead in Hawaii.  HIRA responds to your accusations and proves them false.  You can’t respond to HIRA’s detailed accusations.  I know who I believe.” “hrp is so corrupt it makes me puke.“

-Grey, East Oahu, to Fukumoto’s newsletter excusing her liberal caucus’ “It’s hard to believe that the House Republicans under your leadership would find that licensing illegal people is a valuable Law.  You are following orders from Obama.  His goal is to destroy our borders, and reward those that disobey the law.  To make gun ownership harder by honest citizens goes against 2nd Amendment.  Only criminals will have free and easy access to all the guns they want.  You are Republican, not Democrat.  Is there a difference?“  HIRA on Wonderland Fukumoto-Leads-Hawaii-Republicans-Down-the-Rabbit-Hole

Meetings – Finances – By The Numbers

-Republican Overseas (RO) international call with Cruz.  150 reps, 20 countries.  Netherlands, Paris, Sweden, Singapore, Geneva, Hong Kong, Jerusalem, Canada, London, UK, Berlin, Luxemburg, more.  FATCA is major issue.  Cruz points of emphasis (Jobs, Growth, Opportunity.  Defending our constitutional rights. Restoring American Leadership in the world.).  Took questions for 50 minutes, sliding in that he has 175k volunteers, $47M raised from 690k contributors with most CoH of Rs.

RNC, Charleston.  Crucial meeting prior to the national convention, Rohlfing, Liu & Tagavilla skipNo rep at the ED or chairman meetings.  If previous meeting (and first debate) was important enough for chair, ED, NCM (and their families), this election-year meeting was apparently not.  Fiorina and Cruz teams most visible.  Haley (SC Gov), Deal (GA Gov), Scott (SC Sen) speakers.  (TWT on) Rules changes put off, again, so we’re still screwing with rules three months until convention.  Convention – some delegations are going to live far away.  Two so far running for RNC chairman election next January.

willes-lee-at-2016-south-carolina-gop-debate-R debate, South Carolina.  Better with only seven.  No change but responses are more substantive.  Trump, Rubio, Cruz separating from the rest, not just because of debates.  Undercard Fiorina established as a future contender.    Never know when you’re on national TV (Stebbins hat tip).

State Cmte.  Haven’t received audio yet, received six email.  Attendee “Liu never shows up, and Fale skips everything.  I can’t remember the last time the young or college republicans came but their names keep getting called.”  HRP has only 3/4 district seats with names and only 50% participate (and <5% of precinct seats, statewide).  Some meetings open with the Pledge, some in prayer, this one with the Rohlfing/Saiki Purity Pledge to warn districts that they’ll be booted if they disagree with HQ.  District chair “They said members are not to record the meeting which is a reference to the YouTube someone did of the last meeting.  They are considering making people check cell phones before meetings to prevent that from happening again.”  Rohlfing’s Action Plan for the entire state, which isn’t Strategic or even a plan, fits on three double-spaced pages;  approved by 43% of the state (22/51 districts attend).  Chair “They circulated a generic budget grouped by categories with only generic expenses and made us turn them in after looking at it.  Reminded me of the TPP Deal which was kept in a locked reading room “eyes only.”  Another:  “Budget didn’t include political messaging.  They can’t raise enough money – one round of direct mail to registered voters in my district costs $7,000+.  Multiply that by two or three into ten target districts and you can tell they don’t know what they’re doing.”  Chair “Idiots.  We could get more results in votes, fundraising, volunteers by ratcheting up the communications budget” because voters would be informed BEFORE our candidates hit their doors.  Attendee “Incredible that there are no rules that they follow, budgets & meetings are secret, so it’s now a secret society.“
