Aloha Friends, welcome back.
Bracketing your weekend with last Friday’s report and today we detail finances, national news and readers’ comments. An apology: again on the road, this time several states in several days, so you won’t receive a reply to your email and comments until later this week.
–HRP CSC (state) report for November 7 – December 31 shows that HRP raised 71 cents in the two month period. Yup, that’s $.71. HRP disbursed $8400 from the state account, of which $8200 is simply a transfer to the FEC (federal) account. $19k CoH remains in the CSC account, including the counties $ and some Capital Campaign fenced funds. For the similarly timed end of December FEC report, HRP raised $10.3k but 8.2k is that transfer from the state account plus only 2k in contributions. HRP disbursed $24.2k. The FEC account shows CoH lowered to $61k (including mortgage money) and no payments against the debt remaining at $47.6k. So, HRP begins 2013 with $80k CoH including county funds and fenced mortgage funds. Debt is $47.6k.
-Chang’s finance plan wasn’t a plan and didn’t get approved. It called for a January HRP fundraiser featuring the House caucus (problematic while we have caucus members who campaign for dems and a caucus organized with the Progressive faction to put forth the most liberal bills we’ve seen). I may have missed the invites and caucus event while at the RNC meeting but I think they just didn’t do it (again). Next up is ‘a sometime’ in April Lincoln Dinner (was April 11) or a very vague Capitol Campaign (mortgage killing) garage sale.
-This week it is called the $25/400 Club (400 members paying $25/month) for sustaining donors (no longer 20/800 or 25/800 or 20/400). If you got in when it was 20/800, you should ask if you are still in the club to get the free book and t-shirt.
-In a peek ahead, Abercrombie raised $290k (2.4M total) and has 1.4M CoH for the 2014 campaign. Tsutsui has 102k CoH. Who do you see as 2014 GOP standard-bearers? Aiona (the one Abercrombie beat by 17 points) has 21k, Arakawa 294k (but there is that situation of his not listed as an office holder on the GOP website), Djou 10k, Finnegan 4k (she helped Aiona’s 17 point loss), Fontaine 5k, Marumoto 7k, McDermott 0, Pine 9k, Ward 40k.
-Our candidates aren’t raising funds and incumbents usually don’t during session. Chang was saying that 12 HRP candidates were identified. This weekend he changed to ‘many candidates have indicated that they may run in 2014.’ Others’ CoH: Aiona (the one who ran for council) 0, Au 0, Baron 11k, Bateman 3k, Chang (from his loss before becoming party chair) 0, Cheape, 0, Ching 5k, Couch 7k, Fale 25k, Fukumoto (to cry about) 0, Georgi 0, Hapai 13k, Johanson 33k, Kaapu 2k, Larson 2k, Low 0, Marshall 0, Marten 0, Meyer 11k, Moses 6k, Mulvihill 1k, Reeder 0, Riviere 10k, Smith 0, Sabey 1k, Shimizu 5k, Slom 10k, Smith 0, Thielen 32k, Trujillo 0, Wingard 1k, Young 0.
-For comparison, some dems: Baker $82k CoH, Belatti 0, Brower 3k, Choy 74k, Coffman 2k, Cullen 13k, English 44k, Espero 28k, Galuteria 8k, Green 313k, Har
2k, Hashem 11k, Hee 357k, Ichiyama 23k, Kawakami 18k, McKelvey 8k, Nishimoto 34k, Oshiro 87k, Rhoads 22k, Saiki 10k, Say 120k, Tokioka 27k, Wooley 2k.
-Cheape’s ‘bag ban’ gains Republican votes. Don’t ask this reader for a contribution “As you can see — Johanson, Ward and Cheape think they know better than we do — and think more government bureaucracy is good for us.” Fale and Thielen also voted aye. The bill is only through two of three cmtes.
-Receiving more ‘requests’ to stop providing information, relaying HRP requests and writing about issues. Some email. Some ‘anonymous’ phone calls. It is typical for HQ people under pressure (well, if they even feel pressure to win elections) to miss the positive value of these reports. Readers indicate there may be bigger problems.
-One positive indicator is that readers take the time to express their thoughts (pro and con) about the party. If they (like me) didn’t care, they wouldn’t write. Readers: “Thanks for these emails. Without them, I’d be completely in the dark about the goings on with leadership.” “the Hawaii Republican party is nowhere to be seen. I also do not get why Chang and Bloom are still operating in the shadow of Lingle – she got smashed by Hirono and I can’t see where she has a future politically speaking.” “enjoy reading your updates. the hawaii GOP did shit for me…” “A new party is needed, … it will stand on principle and will grow by attracting members who respect integrity and principle. The GOP needs to die.” “general gist of things resembling a Tinkertown fire drill.” “HRP must organize the Platform Committee. If the existing Leadership will not comply with the Rules, the Hawaii Republican Party should dissolve itself. The Party is not functional.” “During your tenure, we had the most aggressive campaign season for local candidate since I was there. I had the most fun working on those campaigns. glad to see Meyer is back in the capital. Keep holding them accountable.” “Ready did a respectable job at running the meeting. Chang … dialed in.” “the ineffective and timid conservatives will allow RINO’s to keep the Hawaii GOP permanently useless, Sadly, Slom’s brief complaint about bipartisanship at the state committee meeting has not led to a course of action. Hellreich still calls the shots. The Hawaii GOP remains a quiet PAC to route money to [Hellriech’s] pocketbook and clientele.” “You are the source that fills a real knowledge gap about the HRC. Lingle did inestimable damage to the future credibility of the party’s platform.” “Walden .. wasn’t his usual arrogant self. Like Nonaka, he let his ego get out of control.” “…refuse to endorse, support, or campaign for Lingle when she runs for Inouye’s seat, because of her abandonment of principles by supporting the crony-exploitative Jones act, the racist Akaka bill, and the trendy scam of more-expensive “alternative” energy.” “Chang is in it for himself. Liu hasn’t done anything.” “I’m not sure many of our party members know anymore what the Hawaii GOP stands for, and the lame LLIFE platform and their issues repository has proven again to be pretty worthless. They need to determine what is their enduring narrative, themes, and key messages they want to communicate, and stick to them.” “we don’t really know what we’re selling, we’re too timid to take any stands, we’re too incompetent to know how to market it.” “although [Ready] seems somewhat inept, I think he means well” “Chang does as little as he can, and had welcomed [Walden] with open arms to take over. [Chang] is not up to the job.” “Fontaine is just one of many one-term Republican house members in the past two decades in Hawaii who can explain how incumbency was of no use in defending their seat.” “I can remember when downtown was full of smiling people even on non election years.”
-We suggested that HRP secure grassroots training from RNC. Good news is that RNC has funds for state training. Bad news is that there is no mention of training for Hawaii. Good news is that the Leadership Institute (LI), not affiliated with the RNC, IS again to coming Hawaii with district/precinct chair training. The bad news is that it doesn’t appear to be scheduled by or coordinated with HRP. Chang sent out his routine newsletter on February 8, typical stuff. That same afternoon, another Chang email floats out announcing a series of LI sessions beginning February 16. Don’t mistake me for being cynical but if HRP had any input into the training (1) Chang would have mentioned the training in his newsletter to give the letter some substance and (2) HRP would give membership a tee-tee more than a week’s notice. LI is good, it is Blackwell’s organization. When, however, they use Nonaka and Blom as instructors then (1) [reader] “there’s not too much I want to hear from either one” and (2) we lose confidence in the integrity and value of the training. You decide and let us know how many show up and if the training is good.
-This one-week notice for training makes the short notice re-scheduling of the State cmte meeting now seem like ‘long’ notice. For many of you who last year asked that HQ begin announcing these open meetings so members could be informed, you’ve been blown off. The changed state cmte date still isn’t published. This is not good when HQ folks squawk about my information but they won’t assist when members ask them for information or support.
-Hurry to register. In the past 60 days, the projected State Convention registration fee has increased from $25 to 50 to 60. Recently, Chang said $55. Might include refreshments, don’t know about lunch. Convention has been cut from three days to two and now to several hours of one day. Waiting to hear their plan to get neighbor island delegates from the airport to the Windward side and back.
-Chang writes that he has a “Sustaining Donor Plan for Voter Micro Targeting” but last we heard he was working on a sustaining donor plan to pay the bills. Note that his comment is about what he’ll do with your contributions, not about the fact that we have no message to give these voters if he can identify them.
-Accountability. We challenged HRP to update the website and it received a partial update. When Chang announced county conventions in April we reminded him that Rules calls for March conventions and the recent schedule has them in March (1/4 still unscheduled). The newsletter now includes a link to Republican for Life (R4L) events. There’s still NOT the budget, audit, com plan, district chairs, campaign plan, following rules, finance plan etc but there is some progress.
-Distance. This week’s Newsletter is a Klompus (she) interview. Never you mind that she can’t come up with the name of one politician she admires. Never mind that her top priority is getting HRP out of the debt that she (and Hellriech and Nonaka) got HRP into. Every person I asked found it oh soooo ‘interesting’ that inner-circle Klompus spent a paragraph telling how she got involved in politics and NOT ONCE mentioned Lingle.
-If they aren’t embarrassed, HPD, the city and the legislature should be. http://www.hawaiireporter.com/oahu-firearms-owners-spend-nine-hours-over-three-visits-to-obtain-registration-permits/123
-Midweek. Cutter Family Auto Centers Holiday Banquet, December 9, photos with Lingle AND Schatz http://www.midweek.com/cutter-family-banquet/#5489 just past the day Lingle was campaigning at the OLRW election. A month later, Schatz was in DC with his new winter coat as the Senior Senator from Hawaii.

-From before this latest round of Rs rolling over. Remove 8 zeros and pretend it’s a home budget:
* U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000 * Annual family income: $21,700
* Fed budget: $3,820,000,000,000 * Money the family spent: $38,200
* New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000 * New debt on the credit card: $16,500
* National debt: $14,271,000,000,000 * Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
* Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000 * Total budget cuts so far: $385
-Think you could carry an empty magazine in DC? Prominent, white, liberal, guy hosting television show is immune. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crime/nbcs-gregory-wont-be-charged-for-displaying-ammunition-clip-on-tv/2013/01/11/984a7bda-5c1d-11e2-beee-6e38f5215402_story.html?wpisrc=nl_pmfix
-Not fact checked this but read that Hawaii is one of eleven states with more people on welfare than employed?
-Last year we said Super PACs had the ‘power’ at the expense of political parties. DeMint explains at Heritage http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/jim-demint-conservative-ideas-need-a-new-message/2013/01/10/9d0054e8-5b54-11e2-9fa9-5fbdc9530eb9_story.html. Been that way in Hawaii for decades. Unions control the elections. If you need more, consider that PRP’s $4+M would have given almost anyone a win (maybe not Lingle’s 25 points but would have covered Djou’s nine points).

-Beginning a new cycle. RNC has $4.7M CoH with 0 debt. DNC has 4.3M CoH with 21.4M debt.
-Killing an eagle egg is a $250,000 fine and two years in prison. Last fiscal year, Planned Parenthood received $542M from the gov’t (you) to perform 334,000 abortions.
-Told you there would be a fight. Both sides believe they are correct. Both have a record of wins and losses. While conservatives attempt to elect conservatives, friends at Crossroads (had lunch with a couple of them at the RNC meeting) are apparently seeking ‘electable’ candidates. Freedom Works, ForAmerica, Club for Growth fight back. RedState’s Erickson “the power players at American Crossroads are financing a new group to help fund candidates in the primaries who oppose conservatives. In light of their smashing success electing candidates like Tommy Thompson, Rick Berg, Denny Rehberg, George Allen, Heather Wilson, and Linda Lingle, they will expand their roadshow into the primaries during the next election cycle in search of the next candidate who is indistinguishable from his/her Democrat opponent.” Another ‘right’ opinion http://www.hawaiireporter.com/strong-gop-message-requires-a-strong-gop/123

ARE YOU SATISFIED? HRP needs leadership focused on HRP.
