Aloha Friends. Part one of two.
Meetings & Events – HRP finances – How we got here, corrected – By The Numbers. Good luck to our candidates.
This is the quietest Hawaii General election in more than a decade. No compelling candidates; none are particularly good, or bad. S-A says the election “has failed to ignite much passion or even voter interest.” From a mainland operator, however, “I can’t wait till elections are over. This has been one long (and f-ed up) election cycle.”

There are many strong and energy-filled conservatives and Republicans in Hawaii. Thank you. The Hawaii Republican Party can be better.
–Occurring less often than an eclipse, a Hawaii visit by the NRA President gets no mention from a left-leaning Hawaii Republican Party.
–NRA President for Veterans Day. Join veterans and Porter on November 8. Only the second time a sitting NRA President has visited Hawaii. www.hawaiirepublicanassembly.com HIRA members $55, $65 for others. http://hawaiirepublicanassembly.com/enews/NRAporter_veterans_dinner_092214.html.

-HRP FEC. HRP federal account in the black this month, as RNC brings HRP out of the RED for the cycle. September receipts of $69,598 = one of the smallest amounts of only $23,014 contributions + a whopping $46,500 from RNC which instead should be used to win a mainland Senate seat. This doubled RNC largess to $84k+ for the year. No transfer from an ineffective State account. Disbursements are $25,660, none of which is on the radio or TV. CoH up to 107k (30k fenced for mortgage payments, 4k is counties’), with zero designated for Victory Operations to support local candidates or electioneering. Zero provided to candidates, or for Federal Election Activity. DEBT = $12.5k. Sustaining members on FEC report: still only 4/14 Exec Cmte & only 3/51 District chairs, and <30 party members. When leaders don’t buy in, don’t expect others to do so. Expenditures include $1499 mortgage+2991 building maintenance, 1000 debt payment, 1951 mail appeal+1194 telemarketing, 2374 IMS accounting, 148 insurance, 150 liability insurance, 208 equipment lease, and salary = Parson’s 2935 & Sick 1709 & field staffers 3350 +2668 payroll tax+440 health insurance+283 parking. Mortgage = $132,000. HRP in the black 9 of last 21 months, 4/6 months since Hellreich installed Saiki. Party of fiscal responsibility in debt for 48 consecutive months. Maui reader “Please tell the national to stop giving money to the State Party until they are actually doing something. I have seen nothing from the County Party (Fontaine).” RGA gave $25k to HRP State account, appears to be all going to the non-HRP ‘Communications guy’ Qwong, a consultant from Virginia, who sends the HRP hit pieces for Aiona.
Reader caught error. Corrections of previous report in red.
-Synopsis: How HRP got in this fiscal hole and the inept effort to climb out. In 2009, then House leader Finnegan ushered in Kaauwai and Nonaka, who began with a $200,000 warchest from the previous team (Two years earlier, I similarly inherited $100,000 from my predecessor, Aiona). The three of them exhausted YOUR donations, and their fundraising was 50% less than any of the previous ten years. One, of many, ‘questionable’ expenditures: Kaauwai hired Nonaka at almost double the previous Exec Dir’s salary… then Kaauwai moved his family into Nonaka’s rented Kailua home, rent-free. The RGA supported Aiona and RNCC did Djou with almost $1m but Kaauwai/Nonaka were unable to stay afloat. By the time Lingle and NCW Hellreich finally ordered your Executive Cmte (some of the same folks today) to boot them in 2011, HRP was in debt $99,007. Hellreich mentored Fukumoto, then Chang, and grew the debt to nearly $120,000. Even with 2012 NRSC money flowing for Lingle, Chang increased the HRP debt. Unable, and unwilling, to raise funds, Chang slashed – resources, training, infrastructure, assets, events, everything (except his mainland travel expenses) – to bring the debt to ONLY $19,000 for a destroyed Republican Party. Kaauwai, Nonaka, Fukumoto, and Chang were inept at the business side of running an organization. They freely spent other’s money (like a Democrat) and refused to put effort into raising funds. Neither Hellreich nor NCM Liu (Morioka during Kaauwai’s term) provided leadership. Hellreich, who (for Lingle) fired Kaauwai and then Chang, is the constant factor of this death spiral. April 2014, CB “Hawaii’s Republicans are in disarray once again, led by a revolving door of party chairs. Saiki is holding the job on a temporary basis.“
Today. Saiki fundraises better than Kaauwai, Fukumoto & Chang, combined, and likewise spends freely; only two of her four months are in the black. ‘Consultant’ Nonaka for another cycle sucks money from new candidates (Rs and Ds), and from locked-in incumbents by holding their contact lists, when he should spend the next decade repaying Hawaii Rs. Kaauwai, no longer lives in Nonaka’s rental, helps Fale’s race. Fukumoto is running for reelection. Chang’s long-term military deployment was debunked. Hellreich focuses on other projects, not HRP responsibilities. Liu is MIA. HRP debt is still $15,000. Saiki changed (my suggestion) her plan to pay debt in two years by doubling payments. Yet, at the current rate, if she incurs no additional debt, HRP remains in debt until September 2015. That’s 60 months of not being able to message, support candidates or claim the mantle of fiscal responsibility – still under the dismal legacy of Kaauwai and Nonaka, Fukumoto and Chang. Saiki and Hellreich’s politically liberal bent will (continue to) prevent them from leading a campaign to expose liberals’ failures and gain the public’s trust. The $134,000 remaining HQ mortgage is a story to itself.
By the numbers:
-Zero. Polling margin between Djou and Takai.
-One. Legislative Scorecard. HIRA enables you to explain conservative solutions. http://hawaiirepublicanassembly.com/enews/hira_scorecard_090214.html.
-Two. Alaska, New Hampshire TV ad markets are SOLD OUT.
-Three. Racists. “If a group of white Republican women adamantly refused to go near a black man and complained loudly about him, the political press would destroy them as racists. That is what’s happening, however, in Louisiana, North Carolina, and Georgia.” Dems Landrieu, Hagan, Nunn. www.redstate.com/2014/10/30/why-those-white-women-want-nothing-to-do-with-barack-obama
-Five. HRP lack of integrity to address Rs – Thielen, Carroll, McDermott, Pine, Fenton – who endorsed Ds against Rs in the last election.
-Six. Current Aiona deficit to Ige. This is when, last election, Aiona told us he was tied, then lost by 17.
-Six. Net R seats for US Senate majority. Support: IA, CO, GA, KS, NC. We have SD, MT, WV, LA (in December), AR, AK but could lose GA, KS. KY is safe. FiveThirtyEight gives Republicans a 69.4% chance of winning the Senate, with 52 or 53 seats.
-15. Minutes (more) of fame. Pflueger told Hawaii Reporter “that he handed (then Kauai Republican Mayor) Kusaka $9,000 in cash hoping he would get the harassing inspectors off his back.” www.hawaiireporter.com/no-consequences-for-key-politician-in-kauai-dam-breach-tragedy/123
-21. Months since the 2012 required HRP financial audit was to be conducted. Ten since the ’13 audit was due. Donors don’t give when finances are in question.
-24. Months this election cycle and eighteen after Hellreich wrote “the need to use massive voter registration drives in all states to increase our chances of winning local and national elections.”
-97. Million raised by NRSC while DSCC did $127M. Committees shouldn’t screw their base in contested primaries. HRP should take note. www.redstate.com/2014/10/06/the-logical-consequence-of-treating-your-base-like-garbage
-$250/each. from NRA. More Ds endorsed and many rated higher than Rs. www.nrapvf.org/grades/hawaii.
-738. Days (as of November 1) to the Presidential election.
–OCare/Health Connector. Dems want single-payer. WaPo “While some cancellation notices already have gone out, insurers say the bulk of the letters will be sent in October.” PolitiFact ”Obama’s Keep Your Plan Promise 2013’s “Lie Of The Year.” AP writes “At Least 4.7 Million Americans Received Notices That Their Current Health Plans Were Cancelled.” New Health Connector boss is Kissell; Baker would have been so much more effective. Ward, Theilen, Fontaine, Johanson voted FOR Connector.
–HIRA STILL the only R organization on air. Ask HRP why they aren’t supporting this Republican ad. www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-vlv-3J_xU&feature=youtu.be. Dem Party of Hawaii is on TV with an anti-Djou ad. Ask HRP to get on the ball.
-S-A blog Abortion “Hawaii was among the first states to legalize abortion in 1970 (credit to HRP’s Saiki), three years before [Roe v. Wade]. Hawaii also gained national attention after it expanded abortion rights in 2006. .. Lingle, a Republican — with Aiona as her lieutenant governor — signed a bill into law that repealed a residency requirement for abortion and allowed abortions performed in clinics and physician’s offices, not just hospitals. .. the law prevents the state from denying or interfering with a woman’s right to choose or obtain an abortion of a nonviable fetus or an abortion that is necessary to protect the life or health of the woman. The law Lingle signed stood out because the trend in many states nationally has been to restrict access to abortion.“
-Hawaii Rifle Association (HRA) ratings. Aiona C, Ige A, and Hannemann B. Tsutsui B and Ahu won’t respond. www.hawaiirifleassociation.org/images/Candidate_Ratings_2014_General_Election.pdf. Gun groups are afraid to point out that Aiona is weak on guns as again Rs sabotage their own. If Ige wins, we know what we get. If Aiona wins, we get a C-rated R who supports gun control laws and takes guns out of our platform. Ds (including Tokuda, Kobayashi, Ichiyama, Jordan, Say) are better than Rs (including Johanson, Jeremiah, Poti, Lam, Clemente, Lethem, DuBois, Kamaka). Rs refuse the survey = Akina, Fukumoto, Pouha, Helshem, Agustin, Tagavilla, Tupola, Fowler, Marshall, Amsterdam, Allen, Danner, Ku.
-Same day that Habitat for Humanity gets caught and cancels event promoting Aiona, Aiona accuses Ige and Hannemann of supporting the rail GET increase (they still do). Aiona was advising Lingle, he says, when the GET increase became law.
-Not HRP but RNC engages Millennials. 1. Campus program to get college students involved in GOTV efforts including 2. GOP messaging, phone banking, GOTV emails, canvassing and 3. held campaign trainings with Millennials interested in volunteering and working on campaigns.
-Having attended a mainland Pastors and Pews event, heard it mentioned on Meet the Press. Lane’s response to my email “This year the Lord has put $10M in pastors and pews Model ($8M in pastors events and $2M in Ground Game in 9 States.)”
-RNC Priebus “Steyer .. their strategy is to go after Republicans and degrade and depress the Republican turnout by spreading false messages about Republicans. These people are hypocrites.” Steyer makes money from PIRYX that he uses against Rs.
-Susan B. Anthony & National Right to Life is circulating letters of support from eight potential presidential candidates – Rubio, Cruz, Paul, Santorum, Jindal, Pence, Huckabee and Bush – for Graham’s 20-week abortion-ban bill.
